They are omnivores maintaining a diet of insects, fish, small reptiles, and eggs as well as fresh fruit.
Females average clutch size is 20 eggs laid once per year. They live 15-20 years.
These escape artists demonstrate extreme intelligence and quickly learn about their surroundings. They are strong swimmers and will not hesitate to cross water. In captivity they should be soaked twice each week.
